The Waking is another entry into the zombie genre with a bit of a twist.  The series written by Raven Gregory with art by Vic Drujiniu is a mix of horror with police procedurals.

In the big city, four police detectives investigating two routine murders discover that the victims of these crimes are coming back from the dead in search of those responsible for their murders. Now the detectives are in a race against time to find the source of the recent “wakings.” Meanwhile, a father with an incredible ability must choose between avenging his daughter’s death or losing her forever. From the writer of Zenescope’s Wonderland trilogy and Image Comics “The Gift” comes a 4 issue mini-series that brings an incredibly fresh and new twist on the zombie genre!

The series is definitely creepy with some art that gave me the willies at times.  The story is entertaining enough and original enough to make it stick out from all of the other zombie stuff out there.

The focus is really on the cops as they attempt to deal with a world gone mad and make sense of it all.  The plot lines interweave in a somewhat believable but entertaining way.  The themes of revenge and justice are interesting enough.  Overall, if you’re a zombie fan, it’s worth checking out.

Plot: Gregory does a good enough job in that the cops aren’t quite cookie cutter and the villain stands out so that at times you’re sympathetic to him.  There’s also times that the tension builds to a point you think something will occur, but it doesn’t.  There’s a nice build up overall, for what winds up to be an entertaining series.  Rating: 7.5

Art: Drujiniu sets up the mood quite nicely with some twisted imagery and very moody at times.  There’s no shortage of blood and violence and the women in the comics all have similar assets.  But overall there’s a solid look.  Rating: 7.5

Overall: Is this the best zombie book out there?  No, but it’s a solid enough entry to check out if you’re a fan of the genre.  I’m looking forward to seeing if there’s a future tale out there.  Overall rating: 7.5
