UNF Professor Defends Graphic Novels
University of Northern Florida literacy professor Katie Monnin discusses the topic of graphic novels in the Florida Times Union. The article discusses the use of graphic novels in the classroom, a striking change from years when they were hidden away by students who snuck them in to read instead of textbooks.
In the very positive piece Professor Monnin compares the modern graphic novel to such classics as The Great Gatsby and Great Expectations. The very on point piece makes the point that comic books and graphic novels challenge you on two levels, print-text literacies and image literacies.
It’s an excellent read and places comics in a positive light from a member of academia.
