Magdalena #4 COVA_stampedIf the third issue of Magdalena was that moment where Patience is tested in how far she’ll go to defeat evil, this fourth issue is the moment where the hero stocks up with weapons and straps on their armor before going out to confront the bad guy.

Ron Marz is putting together an action movie in comic book form.  We’ve seen the story arc we would expect, we meet the main players, the hero is tested, then the hero gets the cool montage where they prepare and gear up and even as far as the initial confrontation.  But damn it’s entertaining.

We get a mix of religion, action, demons, some great action, it’s all there.

Patience, the latest in a long line of The Magdalena, bearer of the Spear of Destiny, and Kristof, her mentor and Knight of Malta, continue to race around Europe hunting a demonic cult intent on bringing about the era of the Anti-Christ. With Patience doubting whether she will be able to fulfill her duty or not, the Church moves to ensure that their servant will do its will… even if that servant is not Patience.

We’re four issues in and it’s definitely entertaining.  There’s been some cool scenes and this issue definitely has ones I wasn’t expecting, especially towards the end.  The good thing is while this may seem familiar, Marz keeps us on our toes.

I’m looking for entertainment and escape and times and this comic delivers.

Artifacts #3 COVA_stampedThis is the part in the story when the sides gather and get their soldiers in order.  Artifacts #3 pulls this off quite well, giving a lot for those reading about these characters for years and at the same time making it accessible for new readers as well.  It’s a tricky balance and Ron Marz has masterfully been pulling it off so far in this event series.

At the various Top Cow panels I’ve seen it’s stated over and over, good writing will pull off both and the goal of this major event is to allow people to just pick up the Aritfacts series, but for those who pick up other titles, their rewarded with an enriched experience.  Mission accomplished.

While Witchblade bearer Sara Pezzini and Darkness host Jackie Estacado form an uneasy alliance to search for their missing daughter, more of the all-powerful Artifacts are brought into play as Magdalena, Tom Judge and the Angelus join forces. But unbeknownst to any of them, the unseen villain is manipulating people and events to bring about the end of the world.

From Top Cow Universe architect Ron Marz (Witchblade, Angelus) and Top Cow superstar artist Michael Broussard (The Darkness) comes an event series, which will literally shake the Top Cow Universe to its foundation. Top Cow artists Facundo Percio (Broken Trinity: Pandora’s Box), Stjepan Sejic (Witchblade), Paolo Pantalena (Epoch), Sheldon Mitchell (The Darkness) and Nelson Blake II (Magdalena) join Broussard on the issue to showcase the studio’s diversity. Featuring a gorgeous cover by superstar artist Kalman Andrasofszky (Dazzler, R.E.B.E.L.S.) as well as a variant cover series featuring Tom Judge by John Tyler Christopher (Witchblade).

Each issue will also feature a Top Cow Origin backup written by Marz and drawn by a superstar artist.

I wish I could say there’s tons going on here, but really this is that “gathering” moment.  But, at the same time there’s some shocking moments.  Characters are offed and killed, deals struck and backs turned.  We’re laid out exactly what’s going on here.  This is the part where the heroes find out the mission before them.  And we’ve learned this is a motley, never quite getting along and not seeing quite eye-to-eye in what they need to accomplish.  On the flip-side the bad guys are methodical and ordered in a robotic fashion, they have no heart versus the cup that overruns for the protagonists.

The first three issues have all been about set up.  That’s a good thing as this is a big event and there’s a lot more to come.  We’re at the beginning of the roller coaster and we’re just about to reach the apex of that first major hill, and you better believe I have my hands in the air with a smile on my face enjoying the ride.

Angelus #6 COVA_stampedWhen it comes to a lot of the mini-series going on at Top Cow right now, they’re goal is to lead up to their major event ArtifactsAngelus #6, plays right into it, setting us up for what will be some pretty important plot points down the road.  The series has been it’s best when it focuses on the relationship between it’s main characters Dani Baptiste and Finch and falls into a habit of fight by numbers when it doesn’t.  Unfortunately, this issue falls into the latter, but then again, it needs to.

The ARTIFACTS lead-in series concludes!
The final battle for the mantle of the Angelus reaches its climax as Dani Baptiste takes on a foe who knows her every weakness, inside and out. Will Dani have to sacrifice everything dear to her, even her humanity, to survive?

The issue is a giant fight scene, but that’s what I expected going into it.  There has to be a showdown with the bad guy, and Dani needs a chance to save her girl.  As a single issue, I can’t say this really stands out, but this is part of a mini-series, and it’s the conclusion to it.  So, is the conclusion satisfying?  The answer is yes.

If you’ve been following Angelus, you’ll definitely pick up the issue to see how this mini-series concludes.  For those who didn’t pick up the first five issues, wait and pick up the trade paperback.  This definitely doesn’t stand on it’s own, but it’s still a satisfying ending.

Review – Witchblade #139

Witchblade #139 COVA_stampedIn Artifacts the first issue ended with a shocker when Julie Pezzini was brutally killed.  It was a shocked moment that caused me to gasp.  Witchblade #139 picks up in the aftermath, and her sister Sara’s dealing with the tragedy.

Julie Pezzini has led a rough life, including a stint in prison. But that’s nothing compared to being the sister of an NYPD Detective who also happens to wield a powerful mystic weapon. Even Sara and the Witchblade might not be enough to keep Julie safe in Sara’s world of supernatural threats!

The issue gains from the tie into Top Cow’s excellent event, but Ron Marz also has written it so that anyone can walk in and read an emotionally driven issue.  Written so well, it had me choked up at points.

Sara obviously wants revenge and her close ties to the victim forces her to see a shrink before being allowed on the case.  That’s the basis of this issue, total reflection on her life and what she’s brought upon those around her.

The issue ties into the real world with reflections on 9/11 that give the issue lots of depth and increases it’s impact.

Whether you’ve read an issue of Witchblade or not, this is an issue you can read on it’s own.  It’s fantastic and a definite read and buy.
