Meta Con 2012 Adds Two Additional Power Rangers Guests

May 1, 2012

Bloomington, Minnesota – April 30, 2012 – MetaCon 2012, the largest upcoming comicon, sci-fi, and anime con to come to Minneapolis is thrilled to announce that two more stars from Power Rangers will be joining the convention in 2012. Michael Copon (Blue Ranger, Time Force) and Nakia Burrise (Yellow Ranger, Turbo, Zeo, Mighty Morphin’) will join MetaCon from August 31 – September 2, 2012 at the Doubletree by Hilton in Bloomington, Minneapolis for autograph signings and question and answer sessions. MetaCon will gather thousands of fans of TV, comics, sci-fi, anime, and popular culture to the Minneapolis, Minnesota area for a three-day weekend celebrating fandom and nerd life.

Michael Sowell Copon is an actor, model, producer, and singer, known for his role of Felix Taggaro in the television series One Tree Hill, playing Vin Keahi in the television series Beyond the Break, and starring in Power Rangers: Time Force. Michael has also starred as the lead in numerous films, including Night of the Demons, All You’ve Got, Dark House, Music High, and Bring It On: In It To Win It. He has also starred as the lead while producing or co-producing on Killer Holiday and Boyband.

Michael Copon has also played recurring characters on Beyond the Break, Greek, and That’s So Raven, in addition to guest starring on Hawaii 5-0, CSI: Miami, and Reno 911.

As an actress, singer, dancer, writer, and model, when you take a look at Nakia Burrise’s career, it becomes crystal clear that she is a triple threat and entertainment is her passion!

Growing up in Stockton, CA, Nakia was introduced to musical theater and performance in elementary school. She began performing acrobatics by the age of five and later ventured into theater, musical theater, dancing, singing and modeling.  After graduating from Edison High School in Stockton, California, Nakia auditioned for UCLA’s prestigious theater department. She was the only African American female freshman accepted into the theater department that year. By the time she was a junior at UCLA, her professional career had begun. She booked her first role as a series regular on Power Rangers, as Tanya Sloan, the yellow ranger; while simultaneously recording her first pop album with her singing group Divine.  After Power Rangers Nakia took a break from acting full-time to begin a family. After the birth of her second child she began pursuing acting again and was diagnosed with a lung disease that again took her away from her passion, acting.  In 2008, Nakia was blessed with a clean bill of  health (as her illness was now in remission) and she once again pursued her dream of acting.

She has played an array of characters in such shows as 90210, The Middle, Rules Of Engagement, Melissa and Joey, Bones, Samantha Who, Boston Legal, Nash Bridges, Moesha and even found time to film a sitcom pilot that she wrote, produced and starred in titled, Crazy Daze.  She is currently working  as a series regular on an internet series for Mattel, due to premiere in 2012. Nakia plays the role of Nikki. Along with her television credits, she has appeared in numerous films, national commercials, and print ads.  In addition, her stage performances continue to thrive.  She has starred in musicals such as Bye-Bye Birdie, The Wiz, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Cinderella and the list goes on.  Her resolve to be successful in the entertainment business is relentless.  And her will to overcome life’s obstacles are incessant.  But, her desires do not begin and end with performing. She is determined to reach where it counts the most, the children.

In 2006, Nakia, founded a non-profit corporation, “A Day in the Life,” with the mission is to reach inner city children by giving them the opportunity to explore careers, life options and community possibilities through field trips, presentations and field work; opportunities that are not readily accessible to many inner city youths.

Nakia and Michael will be joining other Power Rangers stars Jason Faunt and Jessica Rey for autograph sessions, interviews, and Q&A panels. Other guests include hit anime voice actor Todd Haberkorn (Hetalia, Soul Eater, Ouran) and Internet Entrepreneur YTCracker. The full guest list can be found online at http://www.metaconvention.com/guests

MetaCon is a three-day event filled with activities for fans of all media, including comic books, anime, video games, fashion, music, steampunk, lolita, and more. Fans of Japanese anime can enjoy discussion panels and Q&As with voice actors, while fans of music can enjoy concerts and DJs. SLG Publishing Announces San Jose Comics Festival
Free Outdoor Comic Convention To Be Paired With Annual Charity Zombie Crawl.

SAN JOSE, CA – 4/26/2012 - SLG Publishing, the San Jose, CA comics & graphic novel publisher best known for it’s quirky and offbeat offerings, will be sponsoring it’s first outdoor comic book convention when it puts on the San Jose Comics Festivalon September 1.

The San Jose Comics Festival was up this point and twice yearly event that SLG Publishing sponsored and held in it’s warehouse/gallery space. Those events played host to local comic artists and were casual, informal events that placed a premium on giving readers and creators a chance to connect in a more substantive way than they could at most comic book conventions. In expanding upon the event SLG president Dan Vado took inspiration from the very successful Los Angeles Times Festival of Books and decided to move the convention outdoors, closing off a street adjacent to a small park in downtown San Jose. SLG and the San Jose Downtown Association haves used the same location for a yearly charity zombie crawl and movie night called Zombie-O-Rama (www.zombieorama.com).

The San Jose Comics Festival will be combined with Zombie-O-Rama to form a two day event that will have some crossover appeal to vendors and fans. The zombie event, which is a food drive for a local food bank, will be held the evening of Friday August 31st. The San Jose Comics Festival will be held  the next day in the same space as the Zombie-O-Rama. Established in 2009, last year’s Zombie-O-Rama drew an estimated 3,000 people to downtown on a Wednesday night.

Along with artists and other comic related vendors, The San Jose Comics Festival will also feature a stage of live music featuring both San Jose based bands and a few from outside of the area. The event will be free to attend and will be supported by the sale of vending spaces as well as by local sponsorships.

“Many literary events have outdoor settings”  noted SLG President Dan Vado “When I decided I wanted to expand the San Jose Comics Festival the last thing I wanted to do was to put on another comics convention in some convention center somewhere. The success we had with Zombie-O-Rama out in the street and in the park gave me the idea that we should do the comic book show outdoors and leverage our zombie event’s success to attract people and to save money on street closures and all of the other permitting that goes into an outdoor event of this nature.”

Vado also noted that the great year-around weather that San Jose enjoys lends itself to outdoor events “It’s my hope that The San Jose Comics festival can become a yearly tradition alongside the Jazz Festival and the many other street fairs and events that take place downtown.”

The San Jose Comics Festival is not SLG Publishing’s first comic book convention having founded the Alternative Press Expo in 1994 (which  is currently run by Comic-Con International) and produced two Los Angeles area conventions called IPEX (Independent Publishing Experience) in 1999 as well as a series of collectible convention in Northern California called Americon. The charity Zombie-O-Rama event was started in 2009 and attracts thousands of people to downtown San Jose.

Exhibit space will go on sale soon and is expected to sell out very quickly. Contact Dan Vado for exhibitor and sponsorship information at dvado@slgpubs.com. Additional details on the event will be released at the event website www.sjcomicsfest.com.

SLG Publishing is a San Jose, CA based publisher of comics books and graphic novels. Established in 1986 itis best known as the publisher of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez.

“The J-Pop Summit Festival has become an important part of the cultural fabric of San Francisco and is a unique celebration of Japanese pop culture in all its colorful forms,” says Seiji Horibuchi, the President/CEO of NEW PEOPLE, Inc. and Chairman of the J-Pop Summit Festival Committee. “We’re working closely with a variety of sponsors, partners and the City of San Francisco to prepare a very exciting roster of talent and attractions that will make this year’s Festival the biggest one yet! We look forward to announcing these in coming months.”
