Review – Dia De Los Muertos #1 and Snapshot #1

Dia De Los Muertos #1

diamuertos01_coverInspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, artist extraordinaire, Riley Rossmo joins forces with nine different writers over three issues to tell tall tales from beyond the grave!

A mariachi falls in love with a woman who strongly resembles his lost love, a father is abused by a poltergeist, and a girl who’s mother died when she was born visits the land of the dead in her dreams.

The comic as a whole is very interesting. The first story, the girl visiting her mother is a decent read, but it’s the second one about the lost love that still haunts me. A beautiful story there.

It’s great to see this comic on shelves. It exudes it’s Mexican heritage, the look the feel, the writing, it just fits. The comic is so unique and creative, I’d love to see more comics with a Hispanic infusion. This comic shows off what can be achieved  and how different and fun it can be.

The first story is good, but the second one really drives this as a buy. Rossmo’s art is unreal too. If you’re a fan of his previous work, this is a must buy.

It’s been a day since I read this issue, and I’m still thinking about the comic. Solid work that I wish we would see more of.

Snapshot #1

snapshot01_coverJake Dobson is your typical nerd; works at the Near-Mint Rhino comic-book store in San Francisco. But when he finds a lost cell phone, he’s horrified to discover it’s full of snapshots of a murder victim. Suddenly he finds himself hunted by a vengeful hitman who wants his phone back… and Jake in a body bag! And then things start to get *really* complicated…

This thriller seemed like a simple enough concept. Sort of an Enemy of the State thing going on including a chase scene. Then the ending happened. I won’t spoil it, but boy am I confused and want to read the second issue.

I really dug the first issue of this series. There’s some great action, some great twists and hilarious banter. It’s entertaining, VERY entertaining.

The art by Jock is solid, the detail covered, especially at the comic shop is great. A great example of writer and artist completely in sync.

The creative team was a tip off this was probably going to be good, but holy crap is it great. Make sure to grab a copy before your store sells out, because it will.
