Fox’s New Mutants Expands the X-Men Movieverse

Newmutants10383As reported by Deadline, Fox has closed a deal with director Josh Boone to co-write and direct The New Mutants, a spinoff movie set in the X-Men universe. Boone was the director of The Fault In Our Stars. Boone will join Knate Gwaltney when it comes to writing with Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner producing.

The New Mutants comic series launched in 1982 and featured a teenage group of mutants, so Boone who has success with a film focused on that audience makes sense. The original series ran for 100 issues and eventually spun-off into X-Force bringing us characters such as Cable and Deadpool. A second volume was launched in 2003 with a third volume in 2009.

Next year sees two X-Men films, Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse and a third Wolverine movie is being worked on as well as a Gambit film starring Channing Tatum.

It’s unknown who will make up this team but the original team featured Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane. Sunspot appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past with the rest yet to be featured as characters. The team has had many versions though as far as a line-up.
