Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Who are the Comic Fans? 9/1/2013

It’s the first of the month which means we’re looking at the latest stats for our Facebook Fandom Spotlight, this time with comic fans in the United States! We’ll be comparing these statistics to any shifts from the previous month.

For this report, I again looked at the terms we used in previous reports, over 40 “likes” on Facebook, primarily focused on terms like “comics” or “graphic novels” or publishers. I stay away from specific characters, creators or series, because this does not indicate they are a comic book fan.

Facebook Population: Over 11,600,000 in the United States

The fandom from the previous month grew another 200,000 with all the growth coming from male fans. We’ll discuss that below. Spanish speakers account for now 1,620,000 fans, 13.9% in the United States that’s a massive gain from the previous month, so I can only think that I miscalculated that and didn’t type the correct number.

Gender and Age

With the gain in male fans, of course the male percentage would increase as well. Men gained about 200,000 fans, while women dropped the same amount. Men now account for 58.62% of the fandom, compared to 57.895 last month. Women account for 39.66%, compared to 42.11% last month.

We’ll next look at how the percentage of women and men break down through age. Most likely due to the skewed general Facebook populace, women eventually become the majority as age increases.

The trend lines when it comes to age and gender pretty much stay the same. In the raw data, you can see that most of the age gains come from those under the age of 33 and mostly in men.

Relationship Status

As a whole these numbers haven’t shifted much other than “single” increasing, all in men and a drop of women “in relationships.”

Education

The populations of those “in college” and “college grad” have both gained compared to last month and the male population “in high school” also saw some gains.

 Gender Interest

While there was very little shift among most of the population, there was a slight gain of “men interested in men” compared to the previous month.
